Cairo

Many of the artefacts found at Saqqara, Giza, and elsewhere in Egypt have been moved to the immense collections of the Egyptian Museum in downtown Cairo. The museum has extensive displays of almost anything from ancient Egypt, including long corridors lined with mummy cases, rooms of papyrus and statuettes, and hundreds of statues of men and gods. The highlight is the spectacular array of items found in the tomb of the boy pharoah Tutankhamen, the only Pharaonic tomb to have escaped the robbers. Along with the famous gold and lapis lazuli mask and headdress there are many other superb pieces of jewelry along with the pharaoh’s gilt coffins. The Akhenaton rooms provide an interesting contrast with the rest of the collection. The heretical Pharaoh Akhenaton, husband of the famous Nefertiti, abandoned the old gods of Egypt for a new, monotheistic religion ? probably the first in the world and perhaps a precursor of Judaism. His reign was marked artistically by the flowering of a new, naturalistic style, replacing the unnatural postures and square-set features of “walk like an Egyptian” fame with realism to the point of accentuating unattractive features.
