Alien Factory 1st Birthday

February 27, 2009

Trance is not usually a big thing in France, with dready fractal chic and polo shirts mixing suspiciously at best, but the funky, regular Alien Factory events have a virtual monopoly on what little scene there is. Just about every trance DJ in Paris worth his salt (all twelve of them) will give it all during this 12-hour non-stop birthday bash, stretching from midnight to midday at the flagship Gibus.

Lisbon in 98

February 24, 2009

Parque da estrela : The beautiful park in Estrela, across from the Basilica da Estrela. This is a great park to people-watch on weekends. And a safe place to go jogging in the city without getting hit by a car. Also a sure place to find a shoe shiner and a newspaper quuioseque.

We were in Lisbon in early Feb on a short city break. As explained in the Lonely Planet guide we found a lot of disruption in the city in preparation for Expo 98. Unfortunately due to this work on the metro in particular, we found our Lisbon Card a waste of money. Much of the metro was inaccessible or completely blocked off.

The Tempest at the Abbey

February 17, 2009

Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ is the New Year offering from the Abbey Theatre. Shakespeare’s last play involves a tale of magic, love and reconciliation. Shipwrecked on a magical island, the King of Naples and his courtiers are caught in an enchanted dream woven by the vengeful Prospero until all hell breaks loose on the island. Directed by Conall Morrison, the production stars Ballykissangel’s Lorcan Cranitch and Bosco Hogan, as well as Olwen Fouere and Barry McGovern. Music is provided by Conor Linehan and Ellen Cranitch.

Yoshitatsu Yanagihara

February 4, 2009

Yoshitatsu Yanagihara is one of Japan’s best known living artists, celebrated mainly for his impressionistic sculptures, that somehow convey both the beauty and the ungainliness of the human form. Over 80 of these works are on display here, along with around 50 drawings. The exhibition aims to trace the artist’s development over a lifetime that now spans 90 years. It’s almost a modern art history course in itself.

Masterpieces from the Rau Collection

February 1, 2009

This exhibition is something of a coup for the Yasuda Kasai (Yasuda Insurance) museum, as the extensive Rau Collection has never before left its Zürich home. It features 106 works from the collection, which trace the development of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century. While you’re here, take time to have a gander at the museum’s own resident masterpiece, Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’, which it snapped up for a bargain £24.5 million in the 1980s.
