This sprawling exhibition at the New National Gallery traces the trajectory of one of the 20th-century’s most gifted artists, Pablo Picasso. Curated by his son Claude Puiz-Picasso, in co-operation with the Spanish Pavillion at the Expo in Hanover, ‘The Embrace’ features more than 120 works, loosely collected under the theme of ‘physical closeness and encounters’. Demonstrating how Picasso radically changed the nature of art, the show includes paintings, sculptures, prints and etchings dating from the turn-of-the-century until his death in 1973.

Smugglers – Customs & Contraband 1901-2001

Judging by the number of weekly illegal contraband seizures by the Customs Department, one would think that smuggling anything is Australia’s favourite pastime. A quick tour of this exhibition won’t dispel that notion. A simulation of the giant $400 million heroin haul grabbed by Customs agents in 1998, a bizarre armadillo handbag and a mannequin will be on view in a display of smugglers’ preferred hiding places, while real shipping containers recreate the smuggler’s environment.

White House Easter Egg Roll

The Monday after Easter has become famous in Washington for this folksy event, in which kids ages three to six are invited onto the South Lawn of the White House for an egg roll and other springtime activities. The only requirement is a timed ticket (which are free) and adult supervision, which will get wide-eyed youngsters an egg and a glimpse of the Easter Bunny. And unless world events warrant his presence elsewhere, the President usually makes an appearance as well.

‘She’s a Whore’ is an innovative production at Cube at Project which combines original shots of Hollywood’s greats with live onstage action and tells the story of brother-sister love and murder on the prairie. Playwright John Ford’s swashbuckling 17th-century story of incestuous desire, jealousy and murder ‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore’ is retold in the style of a John Ford western, with John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda recut and projected on to the stage.

Prague’s hippest and cosiest internet café has opened in a space adjoining Bohemia Bagel, long respected as an expat beachhead into the territory of heavy, meaty Czech cuisine. Grab an onion bagel with cream cheese, an arabica coffee – the blend is supplied by local coffee empire Ebel – and log on at one of 20 high-speed PCs. All at a mere 1 Kc per minute. The leather sofas in back are best for composing long missives, while the bank of terminals out front afford views onto busy Ujezd street, good for tracking new arrivals.

Music at the Court of the Grand Dukes

For the first time in many years, a fabulous collection of antique musical instruments that has hitherto been accessible only to academics will be on display to the public. The collection of some 40 instruments, once the property of the Medicis, and are mostly of the violin family. The exhibits include the famous 1690 ‘Medici Viola’ by Stradivarius, which has been added to temporarily in occasion of this exhibition bringing the number of pieces on display to 80.

The republic’s leading alterna-weekly, Respekt likes to force the issues and has been reviving the pre-war tradition of Q&A forums on important social topics. This week’s considers whether the Czech state ‘liquidates its own wealth through its social assistance’. Skanavi has lined up a challenging program for this Kennedy Center recital, including Schumann’s ‘Kinderszenen, Op. 15′, Rachmaninoff’s ‘Prelude in B Flat Major, Op.23, No.2′ and Listz’s ‘Tarantella’, which should give this young woman of Greek-Russian descent a chance to showcase her full range of skills.
